  Capital City of Peru 'Lima'

Let's take a look at Lima, which is the capital of Peru and stops by when you leave or enter the Peru by international flight.

1. Jorge Chavez International Airport

This is the airport you will use to enter and leave Lima by air. It was founded in 1957 and changed to its present name in 1965 in honor of Peruvian aviator Jorge Chavez Dartnell.

It is located in the Callao area, about 18 km northwest of Miraflores, the most popular place to stay in Lima. If you take a night flight to arrive in to Lima, there is not much traffic and you can arrive in about 30 minutes to Miraflores. However, in the morning and during the day, there are areas with heavy traffic, which can take a long time.

2. Transportation system

Lima's public transportation is largely divided into BRT (Metropolitano), Metro (Subway), Combi/Couster (Minibus), and Autobus (bus).

A. BRT(Metropolitano)

It is a public transportation method similar to the bus lane used in South Korea.
Use dedicated bus routes and dedicated boarding stops.
It is an unobstructed means of transportation in Lima, where traffic is really heavy.
However, travelers are advised to avoid this time as long lines are required during rush hour.

B. Metro

Metro is currently running only line 1 by train, and it does not pass through the main tourist destinations of Lima, but runs around the outskirts, so there will be few opportunities for shorterm travelers.

Even I, who are staying in the country, have not used it yet.

C. Combi/Couster(Mini Bus)

This is the most common system of transportation which you will see when traveling in Peru. It operates by converting a van or minibus. Combi driver try to accommodate as many people as possible, passanger may wait for the seats to be filled if the seats are still empty.

The inside of the vehicle is very narrow and there are many vehicles that operate illegally. And it is not a safe method of using transportation as there are often no insurance. Also there are bad habit drivers on the street.

The fare is paid at the time of boarding, or if it is crowded, the person who collects the fare will move around and ask for a fare according to the distance traveled.

There are no designated bus stops and you can get on and off at major streets or intersections.

E. Taxi / Car Sharing

It is very easy to find a taxi in Lima. There are no meter machine in taxis and before boarding  you can tell the destination and negotiate the taxi fare before using it. Naturally, travelers to Peru for the first time are often scammed due to lack of information on the appropriate amount of travel distance.

In addition to taxis, ride sharing services such as Uber, Beat and DiDi are available. Travelers may find it convenient to use this method because you can check your fare in advance.

F. Self-Driving

If you are driving yourself, you must bring your international driver's license, passport and rental car contract.

Lima is a city with very heavy traffic. Excluding the Miraflores and San Isidro regions, not only the road conditions but also the driver's driving habits are poor, which can be very uncomfortable for strangers in Peru.

There are many one-way road, so self-driving in Lima is not recommended for strangers. (However, if you are moving from Lima to a nearby city, it seems to be better than other option of transportation if you drive safely.)

So far, we have learned about Lima's airport and transportation.

Considering the traffic congestion in Lima, the poor driving habits of drivers, the characteristics of a lot of one-way road and relatively inexpensive transportation costs, it is better to use ride sharing services such as Uber or Beat. It can be safe and convenient.
